Shawn Campbell's Capstone Portfolio
Summer Semester of 2012
Two aspects of life, work and relaxation. The summer of 2012 was an incredibly busy for me, finishing up my normal semester teaching English, running two summer camps with more than 2500 students, returning home to America for a month, all while needing time to find some time to relax.

TE846: Accomodating Differences in Literacy Learners
This course was quite different from the other courses that I took, because it was specifically for teachers. The final project, which can be seen in the showcase page, gave me a lot of insight into reading assessments, as well the cognitive approaches to learning by Chinese students. From it, I was able to adjust my test-based teaching practices for both TOEFL and SAT. Though my intent for this degree was to improve my administrative skills, I am very happy that I attended this course, because it gave me a lot of valuable experience for assessments.
EAD867: Case Studies in Educational Leadership
This course was designed around a series of three educational case studies, as well as a final reflective essay. There are two examples of my analysis of actual case studies with falsified names on the left. I highly enjoyed learning in this manner, as it allowed me to see the mistakes of others, so that I can avoid them in the future. The case studies were balanced from a teacher and administrator viewpoint, which allowed me to see both sides of the educational equation.
ED800: Concepts of Educational Inquiry
The course was designed around 6 different modules that included many different readings and movies. The difficulty arose from the specificity and concise nature of the essays, while balancing the need to draw evidence from the vast literature. There are two examples of my written work on the right that required the reading of the many works of Vivian Paley and watching the movie The Whale Rider, which discusses the Maori culture. The topic for the Vivian Paley essay was teacher research, and the topic for the Whale Rider essay was cultural learning. The class was extremely beneficial in providing me with insight into examples of famous and not so famous educators' mindset.
